Frosty Weeds
Sunshine illuminated the frost on these weeds one morning, setting them aglow for a few minutes before melting the ice crystals. Beauty is often found in the most unlikely places, if you keep your eyes open to it.
-
Spikes in Snow
An inch of fluffy snow can make even prickly weeds look interesting. I noticed these when walking my dog past a vacant lot in January.
-
Wings of the Wind
Delicate clouds leave feathery trails in the sky as the jet stream blows these “wings” above Spokane on a cold but sunny January day.
-
Tower of Triangles
Looking up into a high voltage power line tower on a sunny winter afternoon reveals a symmetrical structure of triangles disappearing into the sky. I dare you to count them all!
-
High Voltage
Power lines, and the towers holding them up, look a little shaky when reflected in a puddle after a winter rain in Spokane.
-
Full Moon3
Driving across Eastern Washington in mid-December, the rising full moon glowed like an orange pumpkin above the fields and farms near Moses Lake.
-
Full Moon2
The pattern of clouds on a lovely November evening was lit by the full moon above and the lights of Spokane from below.
-
Full Moon1
The full moon in the middle of November was peeking through the clouds in Spokane every now and then.

Chair with a View
Sunset over the ocean offers a spectacular view for anyone who wants a comfortable Adirondack chair in Oceanside, Oregon.
-
Rocks and Trees
The evening view of the Three Arch Rocks from under the Sitka Spruce in Oceanside, Oregon.
-
Glowing Beach
The morning sun took a while to burn off the mist on Oceanside’s beach and the green hills above it.
-
Two Tones
Sunset orange sky and steel blue water set the tone for the end of the day looking out over the Pacific at Oceanside, Oregon.
-
Oceanside Panorama
From the Three Arch Rocks to Maxwell Point to the village of Oceanside, Oregon, this panorama image shows one of my favorite places. I’ve been walking this beach since I was 4 years old, and the beauty of the rocks and waves and sand and sky never gets old.
-
Japanese Maple Leaves
Fall colors were visible all over the Portland area when we visited family in early November.
-
Mushrooms
A squirrel’s eye view of mushrooms poking up out of the wet ground on a rainy fall day near Portland.
-
Wet Leaves
The ground was covered with different fall leaves in my brother’s rainy yard in a suburb of Portland.
-
Shasta
Fresh snow blanketed the slopes of 14,000-foot tall Mt. Shasta as we drove north out of the Central Valley of California. Glad that the snow stayed high up above the freeways we traveled into Oregon.
-
Joshua Trees
Leaving Las Vegas and rolling through the Mohave Desert, we found a valley full of Joshua Trees. Or at least as “full” as a valley of cacti that grow at least 50 feet apart from each other can be.
-
Two Greens
A cactus with little spines offers a counterpoint to the green juniper bush behind it in the campground we stayed at in Las Vegas.
-
White Walls
The top of Hoover Dam has white concrete towers that are about the same color as the bleached walls of the canyon above the dam, revealing how low the water of Lake Mead has dropped below the top of the dam over the years.
-
Hoover Dam
A short drive from Las Vegas, we drove across the top of Hoover Dam and then I walked out on the huge concrete bridge that spans the canyon just downstream for a better view of the wall that holds back the Colorado River.
-
Bellagio Fountain
No visit to the Strip would be complete without watching the water fountains shoot around in fascinating patterns in front of the Bellagio Casino. Especially for fans of “Ocean’s Eleven” and its (almost) final scene in front of the fountain.
-
Sidewalk Star
I didn’t realize that Vegas had stars in the sidewalks like Hollywood until I looked down as we walked along the Strip. Here is one we recognized from the 50s and 60s – Bobby Darin. “Singer / Songwriter / Actor Legendary Entertainer”
-
Red White and Blue
The Eiffel Tower glows like a giant steel tricolor above the Vegas Strip. Viva La France!
-
Paris in Vegas
Just outside the Miracle Mile Shops, we walked past the big Paris balloon and Eiffel Tower all lit up on the Vegas Strip.
